Healthcare Engineering

Healthcare Engineering: working to improve performance

Healthcare costs are an ever increasing burden but there are ways to use engineering ideas to improve productivity while maintaining quality and while improving the system. Basic methods such as Lean and Six Sigma and the field of Industrial and Systems Engineering are very effective.

Over recent years I have completed a variety of projects, courses and research papers. Here are a few details:  David Belson, PhD

Courses
  • Courses in Healthcare Operations Improvement at USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering and the Price School
  • Lean training for rural hospitals, funded by the California Hospital Association’s FLEX grant from the State of California
  • VA Webinar on the use Lean improvement methods and handbook of Quality Improvement methods
  • And, a new USC degree: MS in Health Systems Management Engineering
Industrial Engineering

“Industrial & Systems Engineers have the best expertise to produce improvements in the efficiency of health care. They can work with providers to identify problems, recommend improvements and help implementing change.” – David Belson, Ph.D.

Many of my projects have been with rural as well as urban hospitals.
